The Group of Homomorphisms of Abelian Torsion Groups

چکیده
Let G and A be abelian torsion groups. In[bq., R. S. Pierce develops a complete set of invarlants for Hom(G,A). To compute these invariants he introduces, and uses extensively, the group of small homomorphisms of G into A. Also, using some of Pierce’s methods, Fuchs characterizes this group in [I]. Our purpose in this paper is to characterize Hom(G,A) in what seems to be a more natural manner than either of the treatments just mentioned.

Selmer Group Estimates Arising from the Existence of Canonical Subgroups
Generalizing the work of Lubin in the one dimensional case, conditions are found for the existence of canonical subgroups of finite height commutative formal groups of arbitrary dimension over local rings of mixed characteristic (0, p). These are p-torsion subgroups which are optimally close to being kernels of Frobenius homomorphisms. The Fp ranks of the first flat cohomology groups of these c...
متن کاملAddendum to: "Infinite-dimensional versions of the primary, cyclic and Jordan decompositions", by M. Radjabalipour
In his paper mentioned in the title, which appears in the same issue of this journal, Mehdi Radjabalipour derives the cyclic decomposition of an algebraic linear transformation. A more general structure theory for linear transformations appears in Irving Kaplansky's lovely 1954 book on infinite abelian groups. We present a translation of Kaplansky's results for abelian groups into the terminolo...
متن کاملnon-divisibility for abelian groups
Throughout all groups are abelian. We say a group G is n-divisible if nG = G. If G has no non-zero n-divisible subgroups for all n>1 then we say that G is absolutely non-divisible. In the study of class C consisting all absolutely non-divisible groups such as G, we come across the sub groups T_p(G) = the sum of all p-divisible subgroups and rad_p(G) = the intersection of all p^nG. The proper...
متن کاملGeneric representations of abelian groups and extreme amenability
If G is a Polish group and Γ is a countable group, denote byHom(Γ,G) the space of all homomorphisms Γ → G. We study properties of the group π(Γ) for the generic π ∈ Hom(Γ,G), when Γ is abelian and G is one of the following three groups: the unitary group of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, the automorphism group of a standard probability space, and the isometry group of the Urysohn metric...
متن کاملSome Nasty Reflexive Groups
In Almost Free Modules, Set-theoretic Methods, Eklof and Mekler [5, p. 455, Problem 12] raised the question about the existence of dual abelian groups G which are not isomorphic to Z ⊕G. Recall that G is a dual group if G ∼= D for some groupD withD = Hom (D,Z). The existence of such groups is not obvious because dual groups are subgroups of cartesian products Z and therefore have very many homo...
